Perhaps BETA is not the right word but I sure don't consider it a stable
package ready to be compiled ... just my personal opinion & I felt better
installing it as a DSO.

Why in the world do you consider it _beta_ ?

You can just create /etc/ld.so.conf - no problem there. ldconfig is
located in the sbin directory.
