John,
Press select on the Cube. You have to hit it something like 5 times. Just
keep pressing it over and over until you see "maintenance mode". Press the
enter button, arrow over to yes and hit enter again. You can now telnet to
the box. It wants 'root' as the username, and whatever your admin password
is. Once you do this, you're logged into the shell as root. You should
find logs in /var/log.
I think they are nice boxes if used in a small office environment. I am
very disappointed in Gateway though. This is kind of a bastard child
product. The one person that was at Gateway that I would trust to support
someone's Linux box has vacated for other opportunities. The tech that I'm
dealing with is good, but I still think that these Cubes fell through the
cracks as far as support goes on the Gateway side.
I also think that this issue should be escalated to Cobalt/Sun. I see
threads from this mailing list about this issue from April of 2000, but no
Cobalt presence on the list. I'm considering putting this together for
Bugraq, but I've got to do quite a bit more legwork to get it up to their
standards.
Regards,
Ryan Gray
