Re: [cobalt-users] Dual Internet Access (Balancing) using Qwest

Qwest will provide for more than 8 IPs as long as you
register as a Service Provider, instead of just using the
standard residential or Office Works account...
unfortunately, I don't know the pricing structure for
"service provider"... I'd definitely be interested to know
if you find out.

You can certainly "nat" out a network of whatever arbitrary
size you want with the remaining 5 IPs available after
setting up. I'm hosting over 40 domains from my house on a
similar qwest setup... multiple copies on different domains
of things like Interbase, SSL, SSH, telnet, >whatever< on
several different machines in my LAN; an ancient PowerMac
7100, an HP Pavillion 6640C, and a Raq2... plus a couple of
notebooks thrown in when the breeze is just right!

Just a couple of downsides so far:

1) WORST customer service and support (after purchase, of
course) I've ever seen (from a company this size), and I
used to work for AOL- so I know what I'm talking about. I
won't go in to it much but once everything was set up right
and I talked to their billing department about the multiple
redundant bills, (and in fact everything I do now that
doesn't involve THEM) is pretty good...

2) IF you don't wanna cough up the dough to register as a
service provider with them and get the extra IPs you're
gonna need, you're definitely hosed on offering anonymous
FTP.

Overall score for Qwest: crappy company who offers a so far
reasonable service.

I have three demo sites set up on a single mod-throttled to
540K pipe through qwest. Check out

http://www.contaminationradio.com/FishNet.htm

This is a massive Flash site, so if you have a Flash
plug-in, you may get a feel for what can be accomplished
WITHIN their 1M stream (side note- I believe a T-1 is
actually closer to 1.5 M than Qwest 1024K pipe).

This whole 1.5M Flash stream is shared on the same throttle
as http://www.atoznet.com and one lower traffic (Er,uh)
adult site... meanwhile the rest of the 1024K is going to
paying cutomers.

NOT bad for two hundred bucks.

Let me know if you check out their "Service Provider" price
structure...
