if you're a perl hacker, you might find fastcgi a reasonable method
to run things like this. takes a bit of work initially, getting
the apache so module compiled, but a very solid platform for getting
perl (and other) scripts running in a servlet style, so your server
isn't kept busy interpreting perl scripts all day.
