Not quite sure from your post if this is a system password problem
(/etc/passwd) or a postgres problem.
In the case of the earlier (and if you have the root password), simply
"passwd <username>" as root, then you can change that user's password on the
system itself.
If this is a problem with postgres itself, you'll have to find someone a bit
more knowledgeable in that area.
