Hey folks,

I'm getting a report from one of my client subdomains on my server that
he's receiving weird emails from somebody, with my server's main
domain-name tacked on ala:

	From: "Hahaha" <hahaha@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
<mailto:hahaha@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
What could be going on here? I looked through the maillog for the day
in question when this was sent/recieved, but couldn't dredge up any
"sexyfun.net" domain from all the lines...

How can I best tell if I am being used as a spam relay?

Thanks much all,

~ Theo

My question is, if I were to do that, would it screw something up?

C'mon transatlantic is slower, but hey, we are hosting a bunch of Raq's for

if we do it from the us, we get 40 - 60 ms so the translatlantic hop only

Hi I was hoping to get some guidance as to what install I should be
doing for the Arkeia server. They have a few source installs and
they also have some red hat .rpms. The one source install is for
glibc which I believe the RaQ3's and 4's only have glibc2.0 and the
other source installs are for libc5 and libc6 .

If anyone has installed arkeia server could you please give me a

I'm trying to find some examples of the mail/access file for
sendmail that includes rules to deny mail from a TLD (specific
countries, for instance) and/or mail containing particular
phrases, though I'm not sure that the latter is possible. I've
been considering using RBL, but not sure if a rebuild of sendmail
is necessary.

Has anyone had success with any of these methods? or knows of
some example access files to study?

There's actually quite a few. Note that I tend to go slightly overboard on
the reading when I'm trying to learn something well, but even so most of
these are quite good for reference. I already knew how to use Linux (I mean
*use*, not manage) on a simple level, and I wanted to get into
administration.

The first books I got were all good, and even though somewhat redundant
they're far cheaper than courses. They definitely got me past a lot of
simple hurdles and into the more specific texts. My first lot was:

Essential System Administration (O'Reilly)
     ISBN 1-565592-127-5
Quite general, including several OS's, but that's
     good for general culture

Setting Up A Linux Internet Server Visual Black Book (Coriolis)
     ISBN 1-57610-569-5
     Comes with a CD of RedHat Linux 6.0 and example files;
gives you quick and simple explanations and gets you up
and running quickly. Not, however, an in-depth anything.

After those two, I've moved into more specific texts for reference to
particular services or packages. At the moment, I seem to be an
O'Reilly-only shop, but I'm still looking for other books that are useful.
(This is also the order in which I'm reading them...)

DNS and BIND (O'Reilly)
     ISBN 1-56592-512-2

Apache: The Definitive Guide (O'Reilly)
     ISBN 1-56592-528-9

Using Samba (O'Reilly)
     ISBN 1-56592-449-5

Learning GNU Emacs (O'Reilly)
     ISBN 1-56592-152-6
I'm using vi for now in very simple ways (can't cut/copy
and paste, etc.) until I get the hang of all-powerful
emacs. I used to know emacs... 8 years ago... now must
     relearn properly.

MySQL & mSQL (O'Reilly)
     ISBN 1-56592-434-7

Finally, I've gotten an exam-preparation book and an extra computer for
home. This will allow me to have a system to install, wreck, install, tweak,
wreck, ad infinitum, ad nauseam, so I can stuff working at the NOC and then
go on to another topic. I expect the whole set of books, plus the computer,
to give me better learning, more in-depth and useful knowledge than any
course, for less money. This way just takes more work, that's all. I may
later take some course just to polish, but I doubt it.

Carrie, don't sell yourself short. You have your own server and you're in
business. No weenie admin-for-hire, regardless of how much he/she knows, has
a moral leg to stand on trying to look down on you. They may know more than
you, but then again they may end up working for you...

I'm like you; I want to know everything. But I make six figures by doing
business... knowing the technology is a hobby, and also lets me be much more
valuable since I can actually cover for the admin on some tasks (more as
time goes on) and since I speak the language of both the technical and
business worlds.

Do whatever you want to do, and you'll outlearn the stuffing out of whoever
gets in your way. As Bob Rotella said, "A positive attitude will not ensure
that you get good results; but predicting your own failure will most
definitely ensure that you do get bad results."

Not 100% sure (still beginning to learn) but I saw a lot of MIME-related
things in httpd.conf (look in /etc/httpd/conf/). Note that the GUI may trash
any changes you make manually; if so, check the archives for a fix by using
an Include directive.

.htaccess?

There are man pages on the subject and lots of online documentation. Can't

However, also check the archives; there has been *lots* said about the

Well I started the script yesterday around 2PM or so and it is still
running. It taking 3 minutes per addition to add a new user. I would say it
is about 3/4 the way done.

So far it has been running 18.5 hours. Has a total of 700 users to add.
Seems to be taking longer and longer every time it has to add a new user.

We will see what happens.

Brain, you sound like a UUNET salesman. Also, I beg to differ with your
statement. There *is* such a thing as enough bandwidth: as long as my pipe
is *never* 100% saturated, and not a single packet suffers delay due to
congestion, I have enough bandwidth. Hence the usefulness of packages such
as MRTG.

If you said "there's no such thing as too much bandwidth," then--barring
cost as a consideration--I'd agree. That is, I'd be glad to have a T3 if it
were free...

My hosting business is now one week old, and we host a grand total of 4
sites. (Thank you, thank you...) At this point, I'm still not exceeding 64
Kbps of bandwidth used at any point; why in the hell would I pay for a T-1?
Of course, I plan on growing quickly, but then so will my pipe: changes up
to 1 Mbps require nothing more than a phone call and are activated within
one hour.

<DANGER, WILL ROBINSON -- DANGER!>

What I'm about to say sounds perfectly reasonable to me, but I'm making this
up, OK? I hope this works great; but let's get another opinion in here
before you go trusting my inspirations...

>From what little I know, you're pretty much going to have to delete the user
info. Assuming that this user only uses your box to check mail and upload
files but doesn't have or need shell access, it's not a major problem.

Copy the encrypted password from /etc/passwd (or /etc/shadow), delete the
user info, set up user s011u432 (or whatever), make sure you copy the
encrypted password back, and set him/her up the alias info. Even better,
write a small script to do that (not difficult) and tell cron to run it at
4:00am. That should work fine, and hopefully your customer won't get any
mail in the 10-second period during which his account is gone.

Note that this *would* cause some problems if the user has files in his/her
directory (such as scripts, a personal website, etc.) that he/she needs. If
this were true then more changes and things would have to be made.

Again, I *think* this is fine. Let's see if someone else adds to the pot.

||>> Is there a preferred method to require a username and
||>> password before entry to a virtual site is permitted?
||>
||>.htaccess?

I can help with this! Note that I have a RaQ4i, so who knows if it will be
different on a diff. RaQ.
Straight from my support FAQs:
---------
How Do I Password Protect A Directory?
You'll need a plain-text editor. Make a file with the following contents:
order allow,deny
allow from all
require valid-user
authname "WhatYouWantYourAreaToBeNamed"
authtype basic
authuserfile /path/to/.htpasswd

Save this file as .htaccess and upload it to the directory you want to
protect.
Note: Once this file is uploaded into your directory, you will not be able
to see it via the web or ftp.
Note: For authnames that have more than one word (like Client Area), use an
underscore to separate the words. Do not use a space.
IE: Client_Area
Next use our hash password script to identify a user/password pair. Put this
pair, one pair per line, into another text file. Save this file as .htpasswd
and upload it to the directory that you specified on the last line of
.htaccess. For security, it is best if you put this file outside of your Web
directory so that it can't be accessed and read by hackers on the Net.

Note: The path for the password file is the server path, not the URL path.
For example,
/home/sites/www.yoursitename.com/pass/.htpasswd

You can name the password file anything you wish, as long as the name is the
same in the path. This is useful for specifying different pass files for
different directories. (memberpass, adminpass, etc.)

If you want the same group of people to access different password-protected
directories, simply give each of those directories the same authname.
Note: Once you password protect a directory, every subdirectory of that
directory will also be protected.

-----------------------
End of FAQ.
Here's the URL to the little username/password script I wrote if anyone

Otherwise, you can do the entire thing through Telnet; making both files...
you'll find that in the archives. I personally find it easier to do it in a
plain-text editor on my own machine and upload it - that way I've also got a
local copy.

Now, there's lots of stuff in the archives about PAM, but on my RaQ none of
that applied. I'm not sure why, it might be some little tweak Cobalt made
with the OS or sumfin. It could apply to you, though, so check it out if
this doesn't work.

Yes.

Note that *all* mail will be forwarded, so you may want to setup more users
with different aliases (webmaster, et al.) if those will be forwarded to
different people.

Note that--if I understand things correctly--this will not work as long as
the original user info still exists, so you'll have to delete the user info.

Anyone care to verify this?

Wow, thanks. I'd been looking for specific instructions for a day or so
already...
