RE: [cobalt-users] dialtoneinternet.net

Hi,
I have had servers located at dialtoneinternet for over two years.
When I first signed on with them I was looking for an alternative to Digital
Nation, who supplied excellent service, but at a higher price. My first 6
months with dialtoneinternet was plaqued with problems, primarily with them
assigning ip's to my servers and others. They did resolve these problems and
for the past year I haven't had any issues related to ip's being assigned to
other servers.

Though their response time to problems is reasonable you should be aware of
the fine print. The last time I looked at their web site they offered 65 GB
of bandwidth, but nowhere do they mention that bandwidth is measured by the
95% rule. Though when you question this they say the 95% is used by almost
all major companies in determining bandwidth. And this is about the only
answer you'll get. Believe me when I say that I have been bitten by this
rule. One raq3, which reported 18 GB of traffic for the month, reported 88
GB by their measurements. This is when they had 50 GB/month, so 38 GB of
bandwidth extra at $3 per GB. This actually wasn't bad, considering the next
month my server reported 55 GB of traffic, and their measurements reported
357 GB. Which resulted in $906 of excess bandwidth usage.

Secondly, since they came out with the new policy of charging you if your
server comes under attack, I get almost weekly (yes weekly) bills for this.
My emails to them about how I am supposed to stop these attacks have gone
unanswered.

Compare this to Digital Nation (now Verio), In two years I have never
recieved a bill for any extra bandwidth, even though there are more sites
hosted on these servers then dialtones. In two years I have had to call
Digital Nation twice, once to reboot my server, which was done within
minutes. The second time I had to call which was just recently I had to call
5 different numbers before I could get tech support. This is just a matter
of being too big. However, my wife had to call, because I server was down
and I was out of town. The thing is the server was hosted at dialtone
internet and she call digital nation, she was on the phone with them for 1/2
hour, emails sent back and forth, they told her the server was at dialtone,
and they did not bill me for this. Now had this been reversed and dialtone
internet spent this time on the weekend, I am sure I would have gotten this
bill.

This is just my two cents, take it for what its worth.
Rich
