Sounds like something I could use too.
Have you tried to put an include line in the proftpd.conf file for a second
conf file?
I do this in my httpd.conf so I can have extra stuff for certain domains and
it does not get overwritten.
Include /etc/proftpd2.conf
then put the custom addition in the second conf file.
If it works, lemme know so I can implement it too :o)
