You're right :-)
If you cat one of the siteXXX files in:
/etc/logrotate.d
You can see that the files are only compressed once they reach a certain
size and not on a chronological basis. If you want this, try:
man logrotate
for more information, and look in some of the other non-siteXXX files in
logrotate for ideas on how it works.
