RE: [cobalt-users] newbie DNS help needed

if only that solution would work it would be a wonderful world. IS it
possible that the RaQ 4 has written some information somewhere that is
overriding data being entered via the GUI? This same box will resolve
www.mydomain.com but not mydomain.com and I DO have the A records set
correctly

mydomain.com >>> 123.456.789.123
123.456.789.123/24 >>> mydomain.com
www.mydomain.com >>> 123.456.789.123
mail.mydomain.com >>> 999.999.999.999

and MX record points to mail.mydomain.com

I was also told to add the mail server IP address in the "Smart Relay" box
and to NOT have the Email Server set as active.

The results?
Client can send email (of course) I can not send email to the client and get
a "name server timeout" error. Also you can not access the site via domain
name only... trace routes on email.mydomain.com shows it as "an unknown
host"

::::sigh::::

You should have one primary DNS server and you may have a secondary DNS
server. For the purpose of this reply, I'll presume that RaQ B is your
primary DNS server. If that is correct than what you do is set up an A
record for the client's inhouse server, for example:

mail.clientsdomain.com. IN A 123.123.123.123

where 123.123.123.123 in the IP# of the client's inhouse server.

Then you create an mx record pointing the client's email to that server:

clientsdomain.com. IN MX 10 mail.clientsdomain.com.
