Here are a collection of great Unix references

I really like http://www.msoe.edu/~taylor/4ltrwrd/

If emacs doesn't work well for you try pico or vi.

If you use pico be sure to start it pico -w

The nice fracture of emacs it that it automatically makes a backup when it
starts a session. It saves a copy as <filename>~ in the same directory. That
way you have a backup. Still it is a good idea to make a back up with cp
before you start when you are editing files.
