If emacs doesn't work well for you try pico or vi.
If you use pico be sure to start it pico -w
The nice fracture of emacs it that it automatically makes a backup when it
starts a session. It saves a copy as <filename>~ in the same directory. That
way you have a backup. Still it is a good idea to make a back up with cp
before you start when you are editing files.
