[cobalt-users] [Mips]/Proc FooPa tar Restore = Skitso LCD + Dead Services

Hi list,
just did a full restore by using the restore CD to a new destination
drive. We had all the old partition data tarred with "tar -cpvz -f hda1.tar.gz"
on another drive and untarred them back into their respective partions
on the destination drive via slave mount with "tar xfvz hda1.tar.gz"
etc. We checked the resulting permissions of files and directories and
everything looked correct/consistent with another machine, though we
also copied the /proc directory and booted resulting with the LCD that
goes back and forth to "checking disk..." & "starting up network..."
The system does fully successfully boot, thought LCD is still going
back and forth between setting up web, mail, and network. We can ping
the machine though no web service are working and telnet gives : can
not find shared library error message.
When doing a "tail -f messages" for the rebuilt drive, we get:

...<previous messages from initial restore state, pre-tar>
Nov 23 18:40:287 localhost exiting on signal 15
Nov 27 06:30:36 www last message repeated 133911 times <here's tarred>
Nov 27 06:30:36 www last message repeated 363854 times
Nov 27 06:30:36 www last message repeated 373854 times
Nov 27 06:30:36 www last message repeated 377854 times
Nov 27 06:30:36 www last message repeated 133911 times
Nov 27 06:30:36 www last message repeated 133911 times
Nov 27 06:30:36 www last message repeated 133911 times <powered down
cold since could not power down from LCD or remote>
Nov 27 08:21:24 www syslogd 1.3-3: restart. <started up again>
Nov 27 08:23:24 www last message repeated 363854 times
Nov 27 08:23:24 www last message repeated 373854 times
Nov 27 08:23:24 www last message repeated 377854 times
Nov 27 08:23:24 www last message repeated 373911 times
Nov 27 08:23:24 www last message repeated 373790 times
Nov 27 08:23:24 www last message repeated 313064 times

We then deleted all the tarred /proc files since they should not have
been tared in the first place and get the same results.
Other than re-installing all apps and coping the home directories to
a new restore drive, is there any way to salvage this tar restore? We
have all the data perfectly tarred and available, except for the /var
directory which was backed up via FTP instead of tar, though we changed
permissions back to root after transferring back to /hda3.

If not, during the CD Restore, are there any commands to tell the restore
process to manually define the size of the new partions, since the CD
defaults with tiny partions:

/dev/hda1 291 M Megabytes
/dev/hda3 194 M Megabytes
/dev/hda4 27 G Gigabytes

If anyone can point out the FooPa, it is greatly appreciated.
Thanks again,
