i´m not sure if this could be caused by excessive mail. watch
/var/log/maillog. if you fear mail-bombing, you might consider to
install spamshield.
watch /var/log/messages for strange or suspect log entries, too.
if you are not aware when exactly this load occurs, you might write a
little script that is started in the background by cron, doing an
infinite loop and checking every minute the average load (in
/proc/avgload or something similar) and executes a ps ax when the first
value exceeds 3 for example, dropping the output to you by mail or
better appends it to a file, as sendmail may refuse to accept mail with
very high loads)
