RE: [cobalt-users] RAQ4 - Frontpage and FTP permissions - Cobalt, read this

I use Front Page a lot (woops - probably shouldn't have admitted to that
here - but take heart, I took the plunge with the linux box recently :-) )
It is very useful when you have a busy schedule. I can FP up stuff no
problems and managing sites is a doddle with FP 2000 (not so sure about the
earlier versions though!) I also ftp a lot of the sites around and
(touchwood) haven't had a problem yet. Obviously you have to consider the
managing of links/permissions etc Front page is particularly good at this
when left to its own devices but you can ftp files in and out for database
work/downloads etc etc with no problems as far as I have experienced to
date.

Non BGates fans might have trouble not wanting to leave it all up to Front
Page but hey if its not broke - don't fix it as they say. Many millions of
Front page users probably have only an nth of the skills of most of the
people on this list and rely on tools like Front page to do the techie bit
for them. As these same users probably pay many of us our salaries may be
its time to take Front Page on board and get to learn its strengths and not
just its crutches. One of my Java/ASP Programmers swears by Front page for
doing the donkey work of publishing his stuff.

The only problem I did have was the enabling/disabling and then permanently
disabling
(despite the GUI showing enabled) of the extensions for which the patch fix
from the cobalt site sorted out with no problems. The FP extensions appear
to be enabled when they are not without it and was a troublesome headache to
start with. If I hadn't of used Front page quite so much in the past I
wouldn't have been confident that it was the server not functioning
properly, usually trusting in my own user error rather than someone else's
hitch.

However, I will do some experimenting tommorrow to see if there are some
scenarios as described by others when it is a problem - just in case !.

Paul.

I have clients who use both FrontPage and FTP without any problems on a RaQ4
as well.
