Wouldnt using POP3 offer better security than accessing mail files directly.
It would also solve issues of sendmail writing to a mail file due to a POP
or SMTP access whilst you are reading the mail file using PHP?

I'm building my own webmail on a cobalt.
If you would like to see it, goto http://www.amphora.nl/webmail
It's completly integrated into the cobalt management tool, bases on PHP4.
Currently you can only read and delete messages. Not sending (soon to come)
And instead of using pop3 it accesses the local mail files in
/home/spool/mail

Use webmail/webmail for username and password. Send an e-mail to
webmail@xxxxxxxxxx to fill her up.

Heya!  I've had tremendous success with a webmail package you can find at
www.althepal.com.  Its easy to install, configure, and you don't have to
install any databases or other components - its all PERL driven!  Anyways,
its worth a look.
