IMAP (which I think is Internet Mailbox Access Protocol)
is a way for the user to look at his/her mailbox. It is
more advanced than POP3, since it allows the user to see
what mail is in the box, then download only what's needed,
and also to organize the mailbox creating folders and
managing mail from within the box.
More powerful than POP3, but also with more overhead and
takes more disk space. With POP3, generally the user
downloads all mail every time they check. They have the
option of leaving copy on server, but this is not common.
With IMAP, it is more common for users to handle their
mail on the server (particularly when using webmail) and
you will find that the space on disk users take up with
their mail will grow... a lot.
How you enable this very much depends on which Cobalt
server you have. Please post some more detail (as much
as you can, really) and perhaps you'll be surprised at
some of the very easy solutions you can find. For example,
if you have a Qube2, there is an entire webmail package
already available which you can install in two or three
clicks, without knowing *anything* about how it works.
Quick and easy, and you keep learning along the way.
We're using this package (it's called IMP) and my users
love it.
