Here's your problem. "456" and "321" aren't valid.

<smile>.

And I can't find any records for www.domainA.com, domainb.com, or
domainC.com.

In other words, please give out real information so that those of us who
understand DNS can do a quick bit of research and help you.

Or else don't expect us to answer.

Thanks.

Jeff

Well, since I honestly don't believe the DNS is actually the problem and I faithfully reproduced the exact set of circumstances and I had wanted to protect the anonymity of my customers, I didn't post the actual information. However, since you asked so nicely, here is a repost of what I originally stated, with the information filled in.

Set up:
*We have www.worldofcrafts.ca with an IP address of 216.234.175.42
   This is the main site.

*We have two additional domains: butterdome.com and
   butterdomecraftsale.com These are listed as www.butterdome.com. &
   butterdome.com, and www.butterdomecraftsale.com & butterdomecraftsale.com
in the web server aliases configuration area for site
www.worldofcrafts.ca. The DNS records for these, hosted not on the Raq
so I can't get into trouble there, all point to the IP 216.234.175.42.
All of the web-based stuff seems to work fine.

*E-mail server aliases were added for butterdome.com and
   butterdomecraftsale.com in the
   RAQ interface for site www.worldofcrafts.ca
MX records on the DNS system point mail for those names to
   butterdome.com and butterdomecraftsale.com, respectively,
   with a preference of 5.

*We have 3 users -- fisch, wok, john.
fisch is set to receive mail for @www.worldofcrafts.ca (catchall that
worked fine on my previous Raqs)

What I want to happen:
  1) fisch should receive all undelivered e-mail to the main domain.
  2) fisch should receive all undelivered e-mail for the other two
     domains.
  3) fisch, wok, john @ worldofcrafts.ca, butterdome.com,
butterdomecraftsale.com should end up in the appropriate mailbox on
     worldofcrafts.ca

What Happens:
  * Mail sent to fisch, wok, john @ worldofcrafts.ca works fine.
  * Mail sent to fisch, wok, john @ butterdome.com or butterdomecraftsale.com
generates a bounce message with the following error:

----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
<wok@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
    (reason: system config error)

----- Transcript of session follows -----
553 5.3.5 www.worldofcrafts.ca. config error: mail loops back to me (MX problem?)
554 5.3.5 <wok@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>... Local configuration error

Reporting-MTA: dns; raq.transcena.com
Received-From-MTA: DNS; mailhub.teliauk.com
Arrival-Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 05:37:07 -0600

Final-Recipient: RFC822; wok@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Action: failed
Status: 5.3.5
Diagnostic-Code: SMTP; system config error
Last-Attempt-Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 05:37:08 -0600

  * Mail sent to a nonexistent address @ worldofcrafts.ca is
bounced back to the sender with a user unknown error instead
of being caught by the catchall. In this case, if I change the
catchall from @www.worldofcrafts.ca to @worldofcrafts.ca, that user
    catches
*all* the e-mail for the domain, which is undesirable behaviour.

Can someone help me out here and tell me what I'm doing wrong? It just doesn't work the way I think it should (ie., the way I want. :-P ) As you're probably aware, there's not much information in the KnowledgeBase (none, in fact) about the Raq4 specifically (and this is a new feature) or in the user list archives.

Since then, I took out all the email server aliases for that account. It only accepts mail for worldofcrafts.ca now (and the catch-all works). If you do a dig on butterdomecraftsale.com, it might say that mail is being delivered to www.worldofcrafts.ca. That was done *after* I sent the message out and O was trying something else. I've switched it back in my DNS/MX manager but they run some kind of a batch job to do all of their DNS at scheduled times, so it might not be back to the stated setting by the time you read this.

Thanks,

M
