PortSentry hasn't got anything to do with covering services like
httpd. It does not protect services, that you intend to run!

(it only alarms you, when somebody contacts your server on a port, you
do not use)

The information that you need to recompile your kernel is wrong. You
only need to install the ipfwadm (for RaQ2) or ipchains (for
RaQ3/RaQ4) rpm package.
