Hello all!
I noticed in my proftpd.conf file that my server UMASK is set to 002 and
I've seen some yak in the archive about setting it to a different number
to help solve my cgi-script permissions (writing to 777 folder) problem.
I.e., when I upload from my ftp 'ware, it is supposed to set the file
permission to 755 automatically, and yet the server kicks it back down
to something like 644, ignoring the ftp software.
And, I can't get a simple script to write to a 777 folder even though
the permissions ARE set for both the script and the directory properly,
paths are correct, etc.
Question: What would happen if I set the UMASK to either 022 or 000 ?
My understanding is the UMASK is somewhat the reverse of CHMOD; e.g.,
removing permissions versus adding them.
Without having to overtax my brain, anybody have a clear answer to what
the best default setting for the UMASK should be to allow scripts to
have write permissions more easily? I'm not fanatical about the security
issue.. I'd like to lower the default security for ftp in general.
TIA
Chris
