is their pc-solaris really so bad ?
H. P. Stroebel, Germany
The problem I see is that we all have a huge investment in the current
platform and added software. Not to mention what the customers have
installed onto the machines.
How much time and money have we all put into learning these boxes, fixing
and dealing their quirks, etc...? Now a new box...
Switching from linux to Solaris may also mean some compatibility issues with
respect to software other than perl, html, and java. We have all invested
into server or company wide licenses for added software packages that will
no longer be valid/available on solaris.
Not sure but will MySQL, PHP, Interbase, Chilisoft ASP, web based email,
backup solutions, and 3rd party e-commerce packages still run or even be
available?
Will we have to change our hosting options/prices/etc if the switch to more
expensive, less compatible solaris is made?
There are other companies' linux appliances out there that may move up a
spot or two on the top 10 list as a result of Sun switching these to
solaris.
It does not make much sense for Sun to buy cobalt for a small fortune and
then scrap the entire Linux line of successful appliance servers. I can see
them keeping Linux but also coming out with a solaris line too. Maybe I am
just hoping they are NOT that crazy.
Just one man's humble opinion.
