I've done this on one of my sites with no ill effects. I wanted to use
standard navigation blocks on every page, about half a dozen different
blocks throught the site. With 1000 pages and growing, and the blocks
changing every 2 - 4 months, SSI was the only realistic solution I could
find.
I inherited the site with .htm as the standard extention, so I'm parsing
that. If I want to let a file go unparsed, I can always use .html.
As for speed, I haven't noticed any change. Maybe when the site gets
_really_ busy I'll need to think about a faster machine.
Trust me, I'm a doctor
