What matters is the permissions of the /var/spool/mail directory.
You can delete a file w/o having write access to it, so long as
you have write access to the directory since you're modifying the
contents of the directory not the file itself insofar as the UNIX
permission model is concerned.
But w/ RedHat & Cobalt's permission schemes I think
/var/spool/mail -> /home/spool/mail is owned by root
and the group 'mail'...so the suggestion to su to root
still holds ;-).
