At chatcircuit, we have run irc servers for over 4 years now. First
on BSDi 4.01, then a Raq3 w/64 megs of ram, and now on a Raq3i
w/128 megs of ram.
The ircd we use on the raq is Unreal IRCD (we are in now way
affiliated with Unreal)
You can get the IRCD and other info at the following addys

UnrealIRCd is an IRC server based on the branch of IRCu called
Dreamforge, formerly used by the DALnet IRC Network.
Since development started on it (around May 1999) many new
features has been added, modified, and many bugs fixed.
Unreal runs both on *nix platforms, Amiga & Windows 95/98/2k/NT.
Some features to mention: Channel Halfops, No-color channel
mode, Strip-colors channel mode, channelmode +q & +a - protect
modes, Oper and Admin only channels, exception bans, Nokicks
mode (channel and user), Flood limiter, Channel links, Host cloaking,
Net* Tech and Co-Admin modes, Whois notifies, Foreign connects
monitor, Oper suspend, G:Lines, T:Lines, channel restriction
(people can only go to these channels if enabled), Trojan/DCC
Deny, RPING/RPONG, Sethost family, Token in server<->server
etc.
FDlists/High Traffic Mode, SOCKS check on connect, Speeded up
server synchs, limited WebTV Client support, /vhost, and many
dreamforge optimations.
UnrealIRCd is aimed to be an advanced, not an easy IRCd. If you
need support or need to ask questions you can go on IRC, /server
irc.flirt.org and join channel #UnrealIRCd.
Or e-mail at unreal-support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx to get it :)

At unreal.sourceforge.net there are links to Services for the Unreal
IRCD. I cannot give any further info on the list of links for IRC
Services ( http://unreal.sourceforge.net/links.html).
The services we have compiled and updated over the last four years
are from www.esper.net
Our services consist of:
Chanserv -- channel registration and management
Nickserv -- nick name registration and management
Memoserv -- memo service for registered nick users
Operserv -- server admin functions for IRCops
You can download the services at:
ftp://ftp.esper.net/services/
Our irc server is at irc.chatcircuit.com .... a subdomain from
www.chatcircuit.com
As far as installation goes, I highly suggest you test after you
compile. All IRC's have some mem leak, and Unreal IRC does as
well.. about 5k per user.
I also suggest that you do not put Unreal or any IRCD on a heavily
loaded server. At this time we host 25 domains - four of which have
medium traffic.
One way we have cut down on the overhead is by using php as
much as possible...and suggesting the same to our clients. If you
have Ultimate Bulletin Board on your server, you will NOT be able to
run IRCD as well. UBB is too much of a resource hog. We are
currently installing Phorum Message Board.
The following is a screen capture of TOP from our server showing
unreal.old and services.old and the load on the server which is
minimal. Our colocation moved the server three days ago so it was
rebooted, we had 90 days since we go this server, with no ircd
crashes.
