you didn't say how or if you had php3 installed; that makes it hard to
answerr your question; but you did use the word "upgrade."

You can:
(a) compile from source (./configure --options-go-here && make && make
install)
    http://www.php.net/manual/install-unix.php

  - compile into apache
  - compile as a DSO

(b) use an RPM
