Honestly what we did is put a big enough UPS on there that they could run
for a loooong time--long enough for us to either a) the power to come back
on or b) us to power it of manually (or from remote). IIRC we had a
sacrificial machine on the network (I think it was a switch actually) that
stayed on all the time but wasn't plugged into a UPS. When that thing went
down we could assume it was a power outage or some other catastrophic
network problem and we'd get paged.
I think I calculated it out to where if we put the the 2 Raq2s, Router, and
CSU/DSU on a 1000VA Alpha ALI1000 it would run for like 4+ hours. The
switch was on another UPS.
But that is a good reason why co-locating in a datacenter makes sense. Let
them worry about it. If you want, put a UPS in your rack to cover momentary
lapses in power (it happens sometimes) when the system switches over to
generators, etc. Then you should be able to run indefinitely.
