In addition to this good advice, on my RAQ2 I need a line like this in the .htaccess
file (you are adding the . (dot) in front of htaccess when making the file, right?):

AuthPam Enabled Off

someone explained the other day (so searching the archives would have given you an idea
to try) why this is needed. Check the archives.
