RE: [cobalt-users] Digital Nation DNS confusion NEED HELP PLEASE also!

Hi!

I just went through this, so I know what you mean about it being confusing.
:)

Basically, it sounds like what that guy did in the post was right.

Here's what I did:

When you get a RaQ from a dedicated host provider (like Digital Nation),
they put in a Base IP and a dummy web-name for the box just so that they can
set it up on their network. According to my provider, ValueWeb, they don't
want you to use this base IP for anything relating to Internic or Virtual
sites, becuase there's a slim chance at some point they might have to change
it. So, when I got on my box, the only IP number was the base IP
216.219.239.86, and the server name was www.valueweb (not valid name). DNS
was not set up at all when I first got into my box.

So, they gave me a block of 16 IP addresses to use for my sites.
216.219.238.225 etc.

My main domain on this box is imonkey.com, so I created a virtual site in
the Site Administration Panel called ns.imonkey.com with an IP of
216.219.238.228. I get free secondary DNS service from ValueWEb, but if I
were doing both, I'd create another ns server (ns2.imonkey.com) with another
one of my IPs. I didn't check any of the options because I didn't want
ns.imonkey.com to be a real website or anything...it shouldn't get mail, or
have frontpage extensions, etc. At some point, I'll toss up a little
redirect web page on there.

Next, I went to Network Solutions, and using the Host Form, I registered
ns.imonkey.com as a new Host (Nameserver). I would do the same for
ns2.imonkey.com if I was going to also do my own secondary name service.

Once those changes went through and my two nameservers were registered as
valid name server hosts, I'd send in new copies of the Service Agreement
form to move my sites to my new DNSs.

For all my sites, I would update the Source of Authority (SOA) settings to
show the new nameservers. (This is the SOA button at the top of the
settings page for each Virtual Site I create).

I'd save my DNS changes, and then at the screen that shows the controls for
Email servers, Telnet, FTP, etc, I'd save changes there too. (This restarts
all those services, which ensures that the changes have been accepted and
are running.)

Also, for fun, I changed my Base IP's name from www.valueweb to
core.imonkey.com. This didn't adversely affect anything, so chances are
it's fine to change the name of your base IP. I did this because mail sent
from Telnet accounts had www.valueweb as part of the headers, and I wanted
people to know where mail was really coming from when they received mail
from my machine. Now, in the headers for email, mail is shown as sent by
core.imonkey.com which is much less confusing for the receiver.

So, in short:

1. Create 2 new virtual sites with IPs different from your base IP given by
your provider. (ns.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com)
2. Use the Host form at Networksolutions.com to register these IPs and names
as Name Servers (hosts).
3. Use the Service Agreement form at Network solutions to change teh DNSs
for all your websites.
4. Update your virtual site information in your DNS settings so that the
Source of Authority for all your websites are your name servers.
5. Change the name of your Base IP in your nameserver settings if you want.
It affects nothing, since the Base IP isn't used by network solutions for
anything.

Wait for Internic/NetworkSolutions to make your changes, and voila!

-Dee (who hopes this isn't too confusing..Didn't get my morning coffee yet,
and it's 1:40pm... ugh. )
