Gerald,Were you using APOP? I'm guessing going through the UI would have updated the APOP database. Since you got to the UI, I'm guess that normal authentication had to be working fine.
I haven't tried to upgrade yet, because I do have several APOP users, but given your work around, that's about the best I can figure is that something changed with regards to APOP between 2.5.x and 3.0.
