[cobalt-users] RaQ3 - Unable to access via telnet and web interface

I have run into a very unusual problem on a RaQ3. Last night I attempted to install
PHP4.0 from source and recompile Apache 1.3.12 from source in order to replace the
old httpd binary with the new one. It didn't work b/c I'm missing a couple of Apache
modules so I resumed this morning. I never did make install for Apache, the httpd
file that is currently running is the original file and the only config file I edited
was srm.conf in order to add two AddType lines concerning PHP which shouldn't affect
anything.

Early this morning while logged in via telnet, I was trying to do copy a file to a
new location and the telnet session hung so I disconnected after trying to abort the
copy through normal means. I logged in again and had the same problem when trying to
execute the same command. I tried several more times with the same result. I waited
an hour and tried to log back in via telnet and it hung after displaying:

Cobalt Linux release 5.0 (Pacifica)
Kernel 2.2.12C3 on an i586

It never displayed the "login" line and it just stalls diplaying a flashing cursor.
I'm still unable to access the server via telnet several hours later. I tried to
login to the web interface GUI, but the browser hangs after "waiting for reply". The
server can be accessed via FTP and regular webpages are still accessible from a
browser.

Does anyone have a clue what could be wrong? What can I try to resolve this problem?
I don't see how it can be at all related to the install I was attempting since I
re-loaded the original httpd binary and didn't touch anything else that would affect
any services.
