Well, figuring out why gets more complicated, mostly because there are
several possabilities....
You might have lousy connectivity, if your nameserver is having trouble
connecting to other nameservers it will take longer...
Sendmail will get distracted if it's having lots of transient errors
connecting also, tho it usually complains loudly in the log files..
You might have your own nameserver misconfigured....bind has a nice
'feature', if you confuse it in just the right way, it will take several
minutes per query to resolve things...
You might have a friendly user sending spam from lists they bought
somewhere that are full of undeliverable addresses....
You might just have users that tend to send lots of their mail to 'free
email' addresses that tend to not work most of the time...
You might be compleatly totally running out of memory, sendmail really
hates that -/
..
I'd start by pulling out a dozen or so 'To' addresses from the mail Q and
try to look them up yourself and see what kind of things happen, do they
time out? do they fail to resolve at all? Do they resolve on your local
computer faster than on your server?
Send yourself an email on the machine and see what happens...(timewise)
