Been there, tried that and it's really ugly. I advocate the use of network
backup management software like Amanda http://www.amanda.org/ I run it at
home backing up a Qube 2 to an Intel RH6.0 system. It's free, comes with
source code and works with dump or tar to back the system up. If you do
decide to use it, join the mailing list. Not quite in the same class as
Legato or ADSM but much much cleaner than trying to use NFS and roll your
own.
