That's the problem with having clients on AOL or a free ISP as you've seen.
Better to use POP before SMTP and just don't tell your customers that you
don't want using the SMTP server that it's set up. If they don't POP before
they try the SMTP relay, they'll get an error anyway.
P.S. I'd be a little afraid of having a client that wants to have a presence
on the Internet but is too cheap to spend a $20 a month for a proper dialup
ISP.
