It is possible to run PHP3 an PHP4 together.
please have a lock at

php4 is now in full release, and is proving very stable.
The compatibility issues are near to non existant, details are on 
http://php.net.
As fair as I'm aware, it is not possible to run both versions at once as 
modules.
However, their is nothing stopping you compiling php3 as a cgi.
