[cobalt-users] [Qube2] Dies...

I used BEI Ultrabac to back a Qube2 up to a tape drive on a WinNT4 WS via a
Samba share. After the backup appeared to finish correctly except for errors
do to unavailable symbolic links and zero length files, the Qube2 refused to
do anything. No telnet, no ftp, no lcd reboot, no lcd powerdown, the gui would
come up but then have a lot of internal server error messages. Strange, but
the Samba shares were still available.

My theory is that Ultrabac automatically removes the archive attribute from a
file which, of course, has little meaning on a Qube2. I overlooked changing
that config selection. Not sure what happens on a Qube2 when one clears the
archive bit via samba.

Now it is decision time. I guess I can order a restore CD and start fresh.
However, how am I going to use the CD when the Qube2 just sits at "starting
up" whenever it is powered on. If it will not boot, it is kind of tough to
reset anything?? Obviously, it is now offline. I like the small footprint, but
am real tempted to bring up a Win2K server and forget the whole durn thing.

Very frustrating when my efforts to avoid just such a catastrophic failure
result in what I was trying to avoid. Oh well, I learned how to configure the
dsl modem directly off the workstation.

Agggg....
