Nope. There are other guys out there. In fact you can become your own
ICANN certified registrar (last I heard it costs about $15,000) and then
you can register for "free". Tucows is one of the best known alternative
registrars, but they expect a minimum "registration trafic". I.e. you need
to start by paying for 10 or 20 domains depending on the way you are set
up with them. (http://www.opensrs.org)

Chuck,
I was under the impression that Internic(the Registry) still was responsible
for the maintaining of the "A" root server and that all Registrars updated
Internic's registries?
