You can do both. For example,

Retrospect resides on the windows platform and uses samba shares (networked
clients via tcp) to access the Qube2.

The dual backup strategy makes sense. Some have suggested that the built-in
software is not reliable for restores. If all it is used for is to track
config files, then restore can be done by other means.
