Okay, here's how it can be done.

Set up an cname in your dns such as upload1
Then create a site with a host of upload1 and your domain
Now you have a site like http://upload1.myserver.com
Create a user
Publish using that username and password
Go into the interface and change the host and site to:
www.my_new_site.com
Transfer the site as usual.

Ta Da!

This needs to be in a FAQ somewhere.
