man services - but, being that I don't know if the manual
page is installed, and since this can be a bit tricky, I'd recomend
that you do a bit of studying even if it means getting a copy of the
applicable man pages.
For the most part, /etc/services is a plain text file which
provides the mapping of a service to a port and a protocol. Thing
get a bit complex in that many of the ports are assigned a service
by IANA and using them for something else can result in all kinds of
strange problems. Most of the popular active ports can be found in
the /etc/inetd.conf file but not everything that requires a port is
started by the inetd. As Cobalt has some unusal functionality
running you might also want to run a port scanner against your box
before you try opening a port that might be used by another service.
I would think that nmap would build on a Cobalt. It's a nice
easy to use portscanner which is available for download on
freshmeat.net.
Peace be with you,
Brent
