Depends, depends, depends...

We've done exactly this in the past.

Download all the html pages and the images directory. Then open the
downloaded site with Dreamweaver and create a new site setup. Then tell
Dreamweaver to check the site links, etc. Dreamweaver will give you a report
of missing/broken items. If this list has nothing on it or is small, simple
fix the site, remove the extensions, delete everything on the site and
upload the new site. If, however, you get a bunch of broken links to
/_borders/ and things like that you're going to have a tough time.

One final thing, if you're using a Macintosh there is the added headache
that they may have named the files with greater than 32 characters which
screws everything up when you download it.
