Installing MySQL as root is a very very bad idea. Apache.org
was hacked just hacked a few weeks ago through MySQL which they too
had installed in this very manner.
Before you go any further, I'd highly recomend that you
remove your current installation and reinstall MySQL using a user
account with a few less prevlidges than root posseses.
I just now completed a MySQL installation on a RaQ. I
created a simple site user account and installed it in that user
account. This is your best option and the user account you use
should not have admin rights or be used for any other purpose.
Peace be with you,
Brent
