No - Yes, depending upon your point of view. The vast
majority of NTP servers are free for the using. Then again, if you
reside in the US your tax dollars are helping to pay for them and
there are commercial services which supply time critical operations
for a price - usually a rather high price.

There are some nuances involved though so it pays to read
the criteria for each of the publically accessible servers. Keeping
them free and freely accessible is only possible if we play by the
rules... For the most part the operators of the NTP servers would
like most of us to stay away from the primary servers and use the
rest of the pack. That translates into our time being off by a few
milliseconds or so - close enough for Government work :-)

Just got done visiting a dos based customer that makes his Raq purr. He was
so happy to do so much with it. With the massive support for linux based
products and a smooth slick system like the cobalt products people have
nothing to fear but fear itself. Just like the brokers, the B&M record
stores, and so many others I think in time the admin will be gone to.
Unless they can find some value that isn't already installed. A VAR can be
a terible waste of money.

Hi..

I admin this RaQ2 server, and during this last month, we have to reboot the
server every 3 days. Ping response is OK, we can't connect using ftp,
telnet, or http, smtp, pop3, etc.
The other day I happened to be logged on the server, and I got a list of
the processes running ("ps aux", http://www.freeweb.com.ar/procesos.txt),
the list is big, and a lot of processes were using 99% of the CPU.

Is there any way to prevent this from happening, or find out what is
cousing this? Has enyone experienced this before with a RaQ2?

Also, aftes some tests I used the command "/sbin/shutdown now -r", and I
got this error "You don't exist. Go away.". What is that? I was root at
that time.. Does root have to be on some list or something to be able to
reboot the server?

Thanks!! Bye.

Ariel.

Grant,

I just went through 2 weeks of the same thing including calling Cobalt on a
daily basis. Our server was going down several times a day for no reason
that we could determine as the logs seemed fine. Our problem ended up being
a bandwidth issue. We did not have enough bandwidth. We increased our
bandwidth and have been running for 5 days without any down time. Hope this
helps.

We have a RaQ3 with approximately 85 vhosts on it all of which have mail.
Sendmail has just been dying about once a day recently. I called Cobalt
support and they believe it's under too heavy a load (why they believe this
is beyond me).

Are there any logs on the server that can point a finger as to why sendmail
dies? When it dies it usually takes 15 minutes or so to restart too. Is
that normal? I've dug through the archives for this list and haven't found
a similar issue. Maybe I'm just lucky!

Thanks,

I'd recomend you check your inetd.conf file for things that
don't belong there before you do anything else. Quite simply, there
is a chance the box may have been exploited. That message you
received when doing the shutdown is somewhat indicative of a box
which has been rooted.

Mike,

You mean with shell access? If user has shell access they can just do
crontab -e and edit away. If they can't vi, there is a shell var (EDITOR or
VISUAL if I remember right) that sets their preferred editor. If they don't
have shell access, and if RAQ allows cron to run a crontab for a userid that
doesn't have shell priv's (I don't know if it does or not), I suppose you
could do a web page or something for them that submits to cron with
crontab -u user file. An aside for budding administrators (more of a
historical note) that back when, on Sys3 and SysV boxen, if you ran the
command crontab without any arguments, your crontab file was deleted without
any warnings. I don't think that happens on Cobalt.

What file are you trying to CHMOD and how are you logged in? If you're
logged in as admin and not the site admin for the file you're trying to
CHMOD, that could be the problem.

RAQ3 problems via FTP
Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi,

I hope someone can help me on this one. I just published a bunch of my files
from one server to my RaQ3. The domain that the files were coming from is
maximum-threshold.com and were published to maximum-threshold.net by
FrontPage 2000. Now that my maximum-threshold.com domain is crossing over I
figured that I would just ftp into the site as admin and drag and drop move
the content of my "web" directory in maximum-threshold.net to
maximum-threshold.com. But I get the following error message when I try to
move any directory.

STATUS:>  Moving: /home/sites/www.maximum-threshold.net/web/4damasses ->
/home/sites/www.maximum-threshold.com/web/4damasses
COMMAND:> RNFR /home/sites/www.maximum-threshold.net/web/4damasses
350 File or directory exists, ready for destination name.
COMMAND:> RNTO /home/sites/www.maximum-threshold.com/web/4damasses
          550 rename: Permission denied
ERROR:> Unable to rename file or folder
ERROR:> Unable to move /home/sites/www.maximum-threshold.net/web/4damasses
to /home/sites/www.maximum-threshold.com/web/4damasses

Any way to do a move via telnet? Or do I have to do a FrontPage publish
again for a 500+ meg site and wait about 8 hours for it to complete?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't bet on it.

Check the headers, see what you can find out. However, I've been reading
this list pretty religiously recently and no such spam has appeared here.
Also, I have had nothing like that sent to me recently. And finally, I've
had the strangest things come to my inbox (take a guess...) with no idea of
how they got my email. But AOL mails and lists, Four11.com, ICQ White Pages,
and lots of other places are sources for spammers to get your address.

Go back to the scheduled backup screen and save the screen without any
settings selected. This will delete the previously stored backup and the GUI
will confirm this at the bottom of the screen. Also, if I'm not mistaken,
you
can only save one scheduled backup at a time. Anything you save *after* the
first save, is simply updated/overwritten with your new save/configuration.

tar up the existing site, ftp the tar over to the new box. untar there.
tar will preserve permissions and ownership. ftp won't.

Hi,

I went to freshmeat.net and searched for qpopper and then went to their
homepage and downloaded the latest (v3.0.1) and untarred it and read the
readme on how to compile it (./configure --someoptions; make) and then
copied the popper binary it created in i think it was ./src over the
in.qpopper(d?) in /usr/sbin and it worked like a charm.

My understanding is if you use the xntp rpm package it comes with a time
server you can run on any PC and use ntpdate to get the time from it. I
may be wrong tho, its second hand information.

Oh, I forgot to mention, before trying qpopper I tried the red hat 6.2
pop3 daemon source, apop, vpop, and a all the others on freshmeat and only
qpopper would let me check the mail, all the others generated passwd
errors when I was giving the right password. I think the RAQ's have a
funny shadow or crypt or something that only qpopper understands/supports.
So Qpopper is the only pop3 daemon I know that works on RAQs.

This is true. You can indeed run your own NTP server.

	Peace be with you,
