Jeff,

Does this lock the entire gui out for your customer? What services do
you allow them to gui manage?

While this certainly looks like an excellent script, and it would be
especially useful for some of my projects (and save me a lot of
rewriting of Matt's work in the bargain), it's NOT open source. You
must link to his page with a graphic link. You may NOT make any changes
to it.

So for the moment I'll be sticking with Matt's FormMail.pl, which, while
not truly open source either, is a bit more open in that you're allowed
to change it and even to distribute your changes. And you don't have to
have a graphic link to Matt's page.

I thought I'd responded to this; is this a second copy?

My only addition to this would be to do both commands in one shell
script, so they'll happen as close together in time as possible.

The RaQ2 does this very well. The RaQ3 has a bug and does it very
poorly.

kill?
I come from a dos win enviroment. and I can't help but feel that even if I
kill some process I'm leaving memory gaps, or something that can cause
problems down the line. can anyone give me the confidence I so rarely need
to kill something? and explain to me why this is a better solution?

The problem is that when you're doing virtual hosting with a shared IP,
the browser has no idea which site to serve; it can't check by name,
because "www.abc.com.ar" is NOT the same as "www.abc.com".

Fix this by adding a ServerAlias line:

ServerAlias www.abc.com.ar

to the VirtualHost section for "www.abc.com" in
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf, and then restarting apache as follows:

# kill -HUP `cat /var/run/httpd.pid`

Note that those are NOT usuall single quotes, but rather the key to the
left of the "1" key.

I've still got one IP# I can't use because I once let a client use it
for a few hours. His RaQ doesn't answer for it any more; we think the
problem is in one of the intelligent switches thinking it does <frown>.

This question would do much better on the Internet Access List I often
quote here. "list-subscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" should work, though I
haven't tried it.

Don't have any idea why this is happening; if it's a hub and two Cobalt

The company I used to work for now spams regularly <frown>. But they
don't do it themselves, so their real IP#s never get blacklisted
<frown>.

(And they're a hosting company, too, and to make it worse, they're doing
from a domain name I came up with, and it's absolutely the best domain

notjustanotherisp.com)

The next time they spam me I'm going to offer to settle out of court for
the statutory damages allowed under California law <wry grin>.

Can't believe that spelling error <smile>. Of course even had I used a
spell-checker, it wouldn't have caught it. A Microsoft product would
have; it would have given it a green underscore for a grammar error, but
I wouldn't have noticed it because Microsoft software underscores most

It'll work. But it's a lot of work. And it's not plug and play.

As you know, Mat, there are some real justifications for shell
accounts. That said, my interest in offering them is that so few people
do now that I can probably make some money doing it <smile>.

The system will be carefully monitored, I'll use an old trick you
probably know about: log all messages to a teletype-style printer, so
no one can go in and erase the file <smile>. And I'll keep it at home,
where I can watch what's going on, and turn it off in seconds if
necessary.

Zeffie,

It doesn't matter at all how much time you have if no one else has the
time.

I can honestly say I'll never take the time to go to a site. Just takes
too long, and even with the high-speed connection in my spare bedroom
(remember when people became ISPs so they could justify a T1 in their
bedroom <smile>) it just takes too long to look at websites.

Email comes to me. That's the way I like it.

I have no time, and very little knowledge. However, I type fast, organize
well, and am happy to help. I will only ask that I work as part of someone's
team, so they can hand me specific pieces of work; otherwise I won't be able
to get things done. But if someone sends me a bunch of brain-dump and says
"Turn this into readable text," I can do that.

I don't know about this one, Zeffie. I realize you said "can be" and not
"is," but most of the time it's a question of the age-old saying... If you
have to ask whether you need a VAR, you probably do.

Someone who buys a Cobalt Qube, for example, and uses it only in standard
configurations touching nothing but the GUI, and who's lucky enough not to
run into any snags, has escaped the need for a VAR. Someone who's good
enough at the game (like Dom or Jeff or yourself) to not need further help,
or who is willing to slug it out by his clueless little self (like me) may
intelligently determine that he derives no value (or, in my case, no fun)
from a VAR. I don't have a Qube so it works... I have one so *I* can make it
work.

However, the vast majority of people, I think, *do* buy it so it works all
the time, and *don't* have the required expertise to fully support it (Qube,
RaQ, whatever) themselves. For these masses, a VAR is, most likely, a good
investment.

It's my guess that the Qube 2 (which I use) has 6.0. However, I'll have to
wait 'til I find some free time (I have a map where X marks the spot...) and
go check.

Earlier posts have made the point that Cobalt has somewhat altered the RH
distribution enough to make the version numbers less than relevant. Can't
comment pro/con, but just so you know...

Just so you know, "man" is definitely installed on the Qube 2. I make heavy
use of it.

I keep hearing about those Windows machines that run stable for weeks and
months at a time, which you don't have to reboot frequently and which don't
crash. Hunted after one for years, even tried to make one or clone one with
the best I could get. Never succeeded yet, and never seen one in the wild so
far either. Wish it weren't so...

Here's how I prevent it:

I find these lines in the relevent virtual host section of
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^222.111.111.222(:80)?$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.domain.com(:80)?$
RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://www.domain.com/$1 [L,R]
RewriteOptions inherit

And change them as follows:

#RewriteEngine on
#RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^222.111.111.222(:80)?$
#RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.domain.com(:80)?$
#RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://www.domain.com/$1 [L,R]
#RewriteOptions inherit

Of course commenting them out like this also breaks siteadmin and
useradmin, but I don't like them anyway <smile>.

/bin/gzip

and

/bin/gunzip

"g" for "gnu".

Don't have to; it's there <smile>.

You're looking at this from the wrong perspective Zeffie,
the kill command is not a better solution. Nor does one gain any
sembalance of spiritual enlightenment by using it. What it does, it
does very well though, and that is to keep your on/off button in
prestine shape while preventing the tip of your finger from
flattening as result of pushing it repeatedly. As simpilistic as
that may sound, one cannot ignore the health benefits associated
with having your index finger free for important things such as
picking your nose, scratching your _____, etc.
