That's a bit strange. But not incredible: I'll ilustrate with two examples.
We had for a while address at domain-name.demon.co.uk, demon being a
responsible ISP (or they used to be at any rate). Then we started to
use domain-name.co.uk. Then we got a second dial-up account at
domainname.demon.co.uk, for use by roving staff. Somehow, spam
turned up at domainname.co.uk for valid user names in domain-name.co.uk.
And domainname.demon.co.uk was *never* used for anything but a bit
of web browsing.
Secondly, here at san.com I get an incredible amount of bounced
mail for unknown users. If I alias those names to myself I find
a lot of spam arriving, as well as mailing lists for websites that
don't check the validity of an address.
There's a lot of people that think they have san.com addresses,
for some reason.
Unfortunately, getting sent somebody's complete credit card details
has only happened once so far....
