Looked at top...but the issue remains with sendmail and not with qpop. Pop
services still function even when sendmail crashes. Thanks though.
Any other suggestions?

I had a similar problem. THe problem was that qpopper was using 100% of
the CPU at all times and overheating the processors and well as using all
the resources. I recompiled qpopper 3.0.1 by hand and replaced the binary
and all has been fince since. run top and see whats up on the system.

Hi,
I have a raq3i and noticed that the logs are rotation in the GUI everyday.
Is there a way to
changed this to weekly or monthly. The Server does not get that much
traffic so I don't think the logs are getting to big. Any help would be
apprectiated.
Thank
Keith

A warning, I don't have a RaQ3, so I'm not familiar with either
the version of sendmail, the linux kernel, or even the assortment
of processes running on the machine. However, I have had a little
'fun' debugging sendmail crashing, and yes, I still have hair left ;-).
I would however recommend running 2.2.14 or higher, there were
some issues with the impelmentation of poll() in earlier 2.2.X
kernels that could result in blocking calls to syslog that will
result in all newly spawned sendmail processes halting as the
syslogd doesn't know how to answer their pleas for logging...
First off, What do you mean by 'sendmail crashes' -- If you login
via telnet when it is apparently crashed, and type:
ps auxw | egrep [s]endmail | less
Does it show any active sendmail processess? If so, how many and
look at their status and the 'command line' space from the ps output.
If for some reason, there are no sendmail processes running then
I would suspect you are having ram issues. Try running:
nohup vmstat -n 30 > /tmp/vmstat.log &
That will redirect the output of vmstat into a file and let you know
how much memory is free along with how many processes are running or
swapped at any given moment -- the '30' will cause vmstat to output
a new line with updated information every 30 seconds...This should
help you determine if the memory is being completely consumed which
could starve the daemon and perhaps cause it to terminate abnormally.
Second off, what does your maillog show you? Do you see any trends
at the periods it locked up?
Third, you might want to check your /etc/sendmail.cf file for a
few possible gotchas:
The following line will cause the parent sendmail process to report
an error to new connections after so many sendmail processes have
already been spawned.
O MaxDaemonChildren=#
The following line will cause sendmail to try and autorebuilt it's
alias database every 10 minutes or so, I think the default is True,
so I would suggest making sure you set it to false.
O AutoRebuildAliases=True
make this:
O AutoRebuildAliases=False
This can be particuarly troublesome if you have a script that
periodically has to update this via a call to newaliases such
as the way the RaQ's management scripts tend to do. What may
well happen is you can get into a race lock in which no one
wins until all sendmail processes are terminated -- and this
usually requires a SIGTERM or SIGKILL at this stage and restarted.
This will show up on an strace btw.
Also check out the lines dealing with load average:
O QueueLA=X
O RefuseLA=Y
If your load is higher than the first, sendmail won't worry about
trying to send it but will dump it to the queue -- if it's higher
than Y, well then it will not answer connections.
Also keep an eye for the throttle for connections per second...
O ConnectionRateThrottle=X

Do you get anything out of the ordinary in maillog or messages when
sendmail dies? What is in your sendmail.mc file?

This is important, especially as they've pulled the unofficial patch
that was available. We had to scramble this weekend to find a copy to
install on a new RaQ3.

I'd settle for a security fix for the problem with FrontPage. It is
getting close to three months since I reported it to them (I was
something would be available "next week" back when I first reported it).
I guess I'll have take it to BUGTRAQ.
They should also go ahead and drop the "Enable CGI Scripts" and "Enable
Server Side Includes" options from the Site Settings page, unless they
are going to change the Apache config so that these options are not
meaningless (any user can do CGI and/or SSI no matter what these
settings).

Subject: [cobalt-users] Ammendment - CGI script writing twice
Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Ammendment:
Actually, wrong...this happens only when server authentication is employed
(we have the site blocked right now during development so an .htaccess file
was in place. This causes the first pass at the script, after
authenticating, to write twice, Seems there is some interaction with the
authentication and netscape...weird. at least that's what it seems like so
far... more testing to determine the exact bug...
Eric
===================================
===================================================
Actually, this was something I discovered regarding resubmitting
information through a formmail script. I'm sure others can reproduce it.
It only occurs when using the "redirect" option in FormMail.
It only happens with Netscape, not IE.
For testing purposes, a lot of times, I'll make a testing form.html for
submitting data and then watching the results, etc., and most times, I go
back using the back button, leave the same data in there, and hit the
submit button again, or on the redirect page, just hit reload, and click
yes to the "do you want to resubmit form data" question. -- then check the
results again...all the time making changes to the script in between.
Well, it's been a while since I did this with a hacked up version of
FormMail, doing various different things, but I did recently, and got this
error, which perhaps was always there, and I had never noticed before, or
simply hadn't run across the right circumstances to produce it.
If you use the back button, hit submit without changing any of the entered
data on the script, the script will actually run two instances of
itself...don't ask me why, and only with netscape and only with the
redirect option on... the redirect option, with FormMail, as many will
recall, or know, does a print "Location....."; at the end of that section,
instead of moving to the section that produces an html output from the
script and directed to the browser. IF you change just one thing on the
previously submitted data, it will not do this. If you do not have the
redirect hidden tag employed, it will not do this. This leads me to
believe that it is some sort of interaction between netscape (v. 4.7) and
the Location header. Since it doesn't do this with IE, I consider this to
be a Netscape bug.
At first I had thought it was something to do with the cobalt server setup,
because it was weird (primary criteria for suspecting the cobalt :-)). I
hadn't realized that it had something to do with the data not being
changed, that was previously submitted, and I hadn't realized at the time
of writing that it only did it with Netscape, and not IE.
Thanks to Avi Brender (thescripter@xxxxxxx) who helped me get to the bottom
of it by actually eliminating the possibility of it having anything to do
with the Rewrite statements for the domain. Avi also taught me something
about the operation of the Rewrite sections as well, at the same time :-)
==============================================
If someone wants to verify this (because they're bored and have nothing
else to do??) then set up FormMail to write data to a file, just before the
print "Location.... "; statement in the if ($Config{'redirect'}) section,
of course with the redirect option using the hidden redirect tag, and
resubmit data in the method I've outlined from an html form, without
changing the data. I'd love to have someone validate this, and then submit
the results in total to Netscape to fix the bug. It really shouldn't do
this, and it'd be nice to be able to mess with altering scripts and testing
in this mode, without having to change something on the submitted data all
the time. If no one validates this, then I could be wrong :-) :-)
Regards,

You may have to set your number of open files to a greater amount. This
would be a performance issue if you are sending _large_ volumes of mail all
certain times. Check you logs for high volumes also check to make sure that
you aren't being used for a spam relay. The clue to this is control files
in sendmail, if memory serves. I can't remember off the top of my head how
to do it, but if the unit you are running is using a version 2.2x kernel,
it's a simple echo, if you're running an older version, you will need to
recompile the kernel. If anyone can remember the command that would help,
or check out Redhat's support site for info on it. Try looking for
"changing the number of open files in Linux"
Hope this helps.

I would LOVE to see something like these in the Knowledgebase.
Q: How do I fix general FrontPage problems on a Raq3i?
A: Delete it.
Q: How do I run ASP scripts on a Raq?
A: We suggest running PHP, a superior open-source alternative to ASP
scripting. We think you'll like it much better than ASP!

Hello,
On my RaQ3i the FTP server doesn't seem to accept a chmod command from any
ftp client. It responds with an access denied message.
I would like to change this, as I rather wouldn't give users telnet access
just to make their scripts executable...
I assume this is just a simple change in a config file, but I haven't been

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I have followed the instructions from the Cobalt Support site for
installing MySQL and PHP3 on the Raq3. I have updated the srm.conf file for
Apache, and restarted. I then attempt the "php.php3" test page, and the
server wants to send it back as a downloadable file. I then thought of the
modules that need to be loaded in httpd.conf and when I add the modules, I
am told that they can't be found. As I followed the steps exactly, am I
missing something? I know on my Linux box I would recompile Apache with PHP
support. But this is not listed in Cobalt's instructions. I'm sure this has
come up a fair bit here, and I'm sorry for reintroducing a subject that has
probably been visited many times.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Do we have to pay for use of an NTP server?

both machines are connected to one and the same hub (no switch).
I found out that the time before the domain/ip starts working again is
between 1 and 2 hours. DNS is most probably not the problem, as there is no
DNS-Server running, neither on raq1 nor raq2, and IPs stay the same, so that
shouldn't be a problem, right?
I already grepped raq1 for files containing the IP-Adress but none was found
(after removing the site).
Any ideas?
Christian

Subject: [cobalt-users] CNAME in the same IP-Cobalt RAQ3
Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hi...
This is Fabian from Argentina..
I have a question about CNAME in Cobalt RAQ3i
I need to redirect a domain name www.abc.com.ar to www.abc.com (this is
hosted in my Cobalt and working fine).
The point is that www.abc.com is working under the same IP (Virtual Name)
that my main domain and many others domains...
When I Add CNAME record at Control panel I´m type:
www.abc.com.ar ---->> www.abc.com
But now, when I type the URL www.abc.com.ar redirect to my main domain and
not to the correct domain...:-(
Somebody knows how can I do to redirect this domain ?
Thanks in advance...
Regards
Fabian
