Scott,
Log in via telnet (not web) and go type "uname -a" at the command
prompt. You may or may not need to be root to complete this
command, depending on how you have your security set up on your
RaQ. From the RaQ that we have here in the office, a uname -a
returns this.
Linux 2.0.34 #1 Wed May 5 16:04:43 PDT 1999 mips unknown
The kernel version is 2.0.34 running on a MIPS processor. Note,
I saw a reply post just a moment ago mentioning Red Hat 5.2.
While Cobalt Linux is *based* on the Red Hat distribution, it is
still a new distro, ie Cobalt Linux. It really has nothing more
to do with Red Hat's version numbers then the fact that they used
Red Hat as a kernel base. A uname -a from my Red Hat 6.2 box
returns this ..
Linux skuld 2.2.12-20 #1 Mon Sep 27 10:25:54 EDT 1999 i586
unknown
Note the kernel on this particular machine is 2.2.12-20. I have
no clue what the hyphen 20 is supposed to represent, but this is
the default kernel from Red Hat 6.2 CD based install. I *think*
the newest stable and available kernel is 2.2.15. Check around
Freshmeat or Slashdot and pick up the URL for the web site that
has the latest kernel info, I don't have my bookmarks around this
workstation.
Now, I'm sure everyone is already aware of this, but I will
mention it briefly just in case. You can not just go, say to the
Red Hat web site, download kernel 2.2.15 and then compile/install
it on the RaQ as the i586 in the second uname there indicates a
Pentium class machine. You would need to get the latest MIPS
ported kernel if you felt that it was necessary to do a system
upgrade to the latest kernel.
Enough of my ramblings,
