The list archives, if I remember had a very extensive list. I think the
thread was "Cobalt Alternatives".

I would warn, be careful of why you are looking to by a Cobalt Alternative.

I would actually write a list of what Cobalt provides, and what it doesn't
and compare it to the alternatives.

Often, people look for alternatives for price reasons. I would strongly
suggest that price be a small factor in your server buying decision. Price
is nothing compared to downtime, support problems, etc. How much does
24hours of downtime cost your company? How much does one day of your time
spent hassling with broken peice of software (add that to the time lost on
what you were supposed to be working on)?

For me the main thing that Cobalt doesn't offer is advanced availability
features, such as hot swap, raid, and easy support for tape drives. But to
get a server that offers these features, I am not longer looking at an
alternative to Cobalt (i.e. a competitor), but a different class of servers
altogether.

I actually think Cobalt is the best of class right now, for entry level web
servers.
