Re: [cobalt-users] Qube2 - Why is samba so slow with many files in one directory?

I haven't read the O'Reilly book, but I have read "Samba, Integrating
Windows with Unix" by John Blair <jdblair@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> as it was
recommended by samba.org.

What is interesting is that John works for Cobalt and his details appear in
smb.conf. Would it be unreasonable to assume that Samba on a Qube2 has been
installed, configured and optimised by an "expert".

Conspiracy Theory: Latest versions of Windows have been purposely designed
to perform poorly with Samba to boost sales of WindowsNT Server. Consumer
versions of Windows have been purposely designed to perform poorly in
networks to boost sales of WindowsNT/2000.

My problem is that the client had things working fine in a peer to peer
Win98 environment ... enter the Qube2 ... Samba is a dog.

Solution is to restructure the data as some directories contained 500 - 1300
files in the one directory. The client's not unreasonable question is; "why
was it fine in peer to peer?"

If the Samba development team have reverse engineered Windows Filesharing,
is this really a problem with Samba or the Linux file system?

Cheers, Malcolm
