[cobalt-users] Re: Advice on SSH

Chad,

Here are my personal opinions on your SSH questions. I've been running ssh pretty much exclusively to connect to a series of remotely located servers that we use for about a year now, so I might be a little biased!

Installing SSH (pros): More secure access -- mainly protection against the brigade of hackers that like to run network sniffers and watch traffic for login/password sequences.

Installing SSH (cons): If you're uncomfortable adding things to your system from other than a GUI, you might not want to try this.

Where is SSH:
Try http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/packages/security/ssh/ssh-1.2.27.tar.gz for a build-it-yourself version (I've had problems with SSH2, but if you want SSH2, try http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/packages/security/ssh/ssh-2.1.0.tar.gz) Or, there's a whole site dedicated to selling SSH software at http://www.ssh.com that I would imagine would be easier to install.

Where are dummy instructions:
All the packages I listed come with pretty decent README files on doing the installation, but they are by no means "dummy instructions". One would hope that the commerical packages that come on CD would have better docs, but no guarantee.

Special telnet applications:
You can't use regular telnet to connect via SSH. The packages I list above all come with SSH clients (the equivalent of a telnet application) for Linux. If you need a good SSH client for the Windows platform, check out SecureCRT at http://www.vandyke.com/products/securecrt/index.html. It is time-bombed shareware though. There are a bunch of other decent SSH-enabled clients that you can find by searching for SSH on www.tucows.com.

Hope this info helps!
