I think I came close to what it is that you want to do. I was trying today
so setup another hotname on our domain so that I could have a site with my
company name and not have to register with internic. So I made
mycomp.ourdomain.com by adding a cname record that points to our domain ip
address and make the hostname be mycomp domain name be ourdomain.com. As
long as you don't actually create a site named mycomp.ourdomain.com in the
add virtual site form the site (or name) mycomp.ourdomain.com should point
to the same page as www.ourdomain.com. Am I saying that right?

So I think in your case you'd make the site abc.xyz.com by doing add
virtual site from the site admin screen. After haing made this site,
you'll go to network services->dns parameters and add a cname record for
hostname www domain name xyz.com. then save the setting and you should be
able to immediately type www.xyz.com and be actually redirected to
abc.xyz.com.

Yeah, that looks like it should work... I'm sure that it will because I
did that by accident. Just make sure that those two entries share the same
ip address.

Please let me know if that worked out for you!

I didn't make any modifications to httpd.conf other than the email
address for the webmaster/admin
