We're doing kind of a similar move. Our plan was to transition the
DNS and the mail/web services separately. The DNS transition takes
an undefined amount of time due to propagation delay.
Here's what we're doing:
1) Set up the new services on the new Raq3i servers.
2) Build new a & mx records in the new Raq3i servers pointing to the
new locations.
3) Leave the Internic records intact, pointing to the original DSN servers.
4) Change the mx records on the original DNS servers to point to the
new mail servers on the new Raq3i servers. This is the only dicey
part, since hosts that got a DNS lookup within the TTL time of the
DNS records will point to the old mail servers. We may have to set
up a forward from the old servers to the new.
5) Change the Internic domain records to point to the new DNS servers.
I believe this method is what you're proposing as well.
Like you're we're open to suggestions. Particularly about point 4.

Hello all,
Currently we have a RaQ2 as a web/mail server with a separate DNS server and
about 8 accounts being hosted on it.
We have decided to move to a RaQ3 and use it as the Web/Mail/DNS servers.
We have the RaQ3 registered as a name server w/ internic.
Is there a way we can smoothly migrate everything over to the new RaQ
"behind the scenes?" Meaning, having everything change over with minimum
involvement with our current account holders - so that they only need to
accept the DNS server changes associated with their domain names?
I think our biggest dilemma is the email situation...
Should we change the IP of our MX records of our current mail server to that
of the RaQ3?
Then make DNS changes to the domains at internic, which will then point all
the domains to the RaQ3 (which will have the final correct DNS
configurations)?
Would this work? How many 'holes' does this plan have?
Thanks for ANY advice!
Leo.
